WHIPLASH PHYSIOTHERAPY

Whiplash pain can limit working life and activities; however, your condition can improve within 2-3 weeks using the appropriate remedy. Whiplash is caused by a sprain of the neck due to a sudden movement of the head. Also, if you recently had a whiplash due to an accident, you may experience acute/severe pain as a result of a strain on the facet joints in the neck.

However, whiplash symptoms can be successfully treated with physiotherapy. At Milestone Physio & Wellness Clinic, our physiotherapists are trained and certified in handling whiplash injuries, giving us a unique skill to assess and diagnose whiplash injuries.

How Does Whiplash Injury Happen?

Whiplash injuries to the neck are common in car accidents and contact sports. In most cases, the head is violently thrown forwards or backward due to an impact; as a result causing injury to structures in the neck.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Whiplash?

Neck pain and stiffness may appear several hours later, and there is no sign of relief after a while. Most people may experience difficulty moving their neck, pain or stiffness in their upper back, shoulders, and arms, dizziness, headache, blurred vision, or pain in other body parts. In some cases, some people become irritable and struggle to concentrate. If you notice any of these symptoms, we urge you to Contact us at Milestone Physio & Wellness Clinic.

Whiplash Injury Physiotherapy Treatment

Physiotherapy is the best treatment for any victim suffering from whiplash injury. There are numerous approaches we can take to treat whiplash and assist our clients in making a full recovery. At your first appointment, a specialist will examine the affected area and ask questions to determine exactly what has happened to your neck. Based on your assessment, an appropriate treatment plan will be developed. Treatment may begin with techniques to relieve pain and help improve the range of motion in your neck. The process may include the following:

How Can I Help Myself If I Have Whiplash?

Whiplash injuries rarely heal without the assistance of a physiotherapist. You should schedule an appointment at Milestone Physio & Wellness Clinic soon as possible following your accident.

What Can I Do To Alleviate The Discomfort?

You should see a physiotherapist as soon as possible so that they can assess your whiplash and provide you with a treatment plan.

Here are five ways to manage pain during the first 72 hours or until you can see a physiotherapist:

01. Rest – Avoid doing anything strenuous, such as going to the gym or heavy lifting. When you lie down, ensure your neck and back are supported by the sofa or pillows.

02. Heat and ice – Many people find this provides quick relief from whiplash pain. Some people prefer ice to heat, while others prefer heat to ice. It would be best if you did whatever felt natural to you. During the first three days after injury, apply ice for 5 minutes every two hours or heat for up to 15 minutes every two hours. Wrap the ice or heat in a tea towel to protect your skin from irritation.

03. Pain relievers – You may need to take pain relievers under the supervision of a pharmacist or doctor.

04. Relax – Tensing into your pain and holding your posture in a certain way to protect your neck can hinder recovery and create bad habits.

05. Keep moving – Rest the affected area and avoid any activities that may aggravate it further, but avoid total ‘bed rest’ and immobilizing your entire body. Continue to move as much as you can within your pain threshold. This will help to keep your blood flowing and your muscles mobile.

COULD A WHIPLASH INJURY HAVE LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES?

If properly diagnosed and treated, mild and moderate whiplash injuries do not usually have long-term consequences. In mild and moderate cases, recovery usually takes a few weeks or months. On the other hand, a severe case can occasionally result in disc degeneration in the neck and joint damage, resulting in long-term restrictions and pain.

WHAT IF TREATMENT FAILS TO ALLEVIATE OR RESOLVE WHIPLASH?

It is extremely rare for therapy to be ineffective; in such cases, we would refer you to a consultant for further investigation.
