How Does It Work?
The vestibular system works in partnership with vision, proprioception (the sense of knowing where your body is positioned in space), and somatosensory information (the sense of touch). Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is an exercise-based program designed to promote central nervous system compensation for inner ear deficits.
Your physiotherapist will perform a detailed physical examination to evaluate your gait, balance, coordination, range of motion, strength, posture, and functional abilities. Through the practice of different activities using VRT exercises, you are retraining your brain to use other senses (such as vision) to interpret signals from the vestibular system so that you feel stable once again. These exercises are divided into three.
- Habituation
- Gaze stabilization
- Balance training
